Layers allow you to visualize data sets visually on the map. The library includes several types of layers, which are visualized differently:
Metric Layers: Show the distribution of numerical values, like temperature, across the map
Feature Layers: Show specific points, lines, or polygons representing features on the map
Boundary Layers: Show geographic boundaries, such as municipalities or watersheds
Layer Packs: Groupings of other layers according to a particular benefit
Turning layers on
There are two ways to activate layers:
Through the site profile
Through the layer library
To access layers via the site profile:
Create or click on a site
Click on a data card in the righthand site profile to activate its underlying layers
To access layers via the layer library:
Click the Layers icon in the top-left tray
Browse or search for layers
Click on a layer to turn it on
Using the legend
When you turn on a layer, the legend will appear in the lower left corner of your screen. The legend includes:
A list of active layers
A color ramp for any metric layers
A colored circle identifying any feature or boundary layers
When you hover over a layer, you will see additional icons for:
Toggling layer visibility
Accessing the layer's guidebook article
Turning the layer off
When a layer is turned off, it will be removed from the legend. When no layers remain active, the legend will disappear.
Interacting with layers
Interacting with layers on the map allows you to see more details about the data.
For metric layers, if you hover over the map, you will see a circle appear on the color ramp in the legend, indicating where the data point falls in the distribution of values across LA County. You can additionally click on the map to see a popover with the specific value.
For feature and boundary layers, if you click on the map, you will see a popover with more information.
